How to Open and View .NFO Files

Many users who download program files on the internet find it difficult to open or view NFO files. These are just text files and using them is very easy.
NFO files are really “info” files. These text files frequently contain information regarding the installation or use of downloaded packages. Here is how to open and use these files.

If you click on it without following these directions, you will probably get this error:

System Information cannot open this NFO file. It might be corrupted or an unrecognized version.

You can download many programs to view these text files; however, why not just use notepad to view them?
1. Browse to the NFO file on your computer
2. Right-click on the file and click Open With
(If you are given several options in the menu here, select Choose Program…)
3. Select Notepad under Other Programs
(In Vista you might need to actually click the Other Programs drop down arrow on the right of the Open With window)
4. Make sure that Always use the selected program to open this kind of file is checked.
5. Click OK.

Save your Processor Power

Your processor polls your USB ports once every millisecond. It keeps doing this, even if you aren’t going to attach any USB devices.
You can increase the polling interval—essentially by enabling “USB idling”—thus allowing some processors to enter power-saving mode.

Navigate to:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Class\{36FC9E 60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}\0000

Create a new DWORD value called IdleEnable and set it to 1 to enable USB idling, thus increasing the polling interval. Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

How Long Has Your System Been Running?

Click Start | Run and type cmd to open a command prompt.
At the prompt, type systeminfo

Scroll down the list of information to the line that says System Up Time.
This will tell you in days, hours, minutes and seconds how long the system has been up.

Use ur Printer Efficiently

These tips mainly concentrate on ink jet printers.

Use only genuine ink cartridges from the right company to prevent clogging, leaks and bleeding.

Make sure you set your printer driver settings correctly.

If you match your printer setting, paper type and ink you will get the best result.
Handle photographic papers by the edge only.

Using glossy papers to print is more cheap than plain papers as plain papers draws more ink, while glossy papers do not.It can also give you a fine and neat print.

Soon after the print don't touch the print out.Make sure the print out is dry else it will cause smudging.

Using a bond paper behind a heavy sheet can improve the feed.

Update the printer drivers regularly.

Guidelines to Speed Up & Maintain ur Hard Drive

Use disk cleaners like ccleaner regularly.

Dont ever bring magnetic materials near your hard drive.

Never install unnecessary programs in your hard drives. These can really affect the boot time and hard drive performance.

Avoid pressing reset button if the hard drive is in the writing state as this can damage the head of the hard disk.

Use a good Hard disk defragment tool.Remember to defragment your hard drives at least once in 15 days.
Use a hard disk defragmenting tool other than the one in windows, because the defragmenting tool in windows takes a lot of time to complete its operation.
Moreover it cant defragment files according to our needs.

Instead use tools like Perfect Disk 2008.If you want a free disk defragment tool go for tools like auslogics disk defrag.

There are several tweaks to speed up hard disk's, but these will work only for the time being. After some days you will notice the speed degrading gradually .So instead defragment your hard disks regularly to keep them running at maximum speed every day.

Speed Up Pendrive while Copying

Plug in your USB Drive.

Then Open My Computer> right-click on your USB Drive >click Properties.

Select your USB drive Under Hardwares and choose Properties.

You will see a dialog box saying " Optimize for quick removal".This option is selected by default.

Select "Optimize for Performance"option.

Now, remove USB drive and plug it again.
Copy some files from the drive to your system or vice-versa. You can notice the speed increase.

Note :- This trick may some times create write errors. But it will come in handy while copying files larger than a size of 1GB.

Increase hard disk speed in Windows

This tip is only recommended if you have 256MB RAM or higher.

Follow these steps:

1.Run SYSEDIT.EXE from the Run command.
2.Expand the system.ini file window.
3.Scroll down almost to the end of the file till you find a line called [386enh].
4.Press Enter to make one blank line, and in that line type

Irq14=4096

Note: This line IS CASE SENSITIVE!!!

5.Click on the File menu, then choose Save.
6.Close SYSEDIT and reboot your computer.

Done. Speed improvement will be noticed after the computer reboots.

Note: The most speed improvement is visible with IDE drives, however there are reports that this tweak also does good for SCSI disks. In any case, it won't harm your system, so why not try it yourself and let me know what you find.

How To Protect Document with Password

( In MS-Office )

You can protect your document by applying password so that unauthorized person can not display as well as modify your document. You can apply two types of passwords:

Password to open the document:

If it is applied then you have to give the correct password to open the document, otherwise you cannot open the document.

Password to modify the document:

If it is applied then you have to give the correct password to modify the document, otherwise your document is opened but you cannot modify the document. It means that your document becomes read-only.

To apply a password to document, follow these steps.

* Open Save As dialog box by selecting "Save As" command from File menu.

* Click "Tools" button of Save As dialog box and choose "General Options" from drop down menu, "Save" dialog box appears as shown in figure below.

* Enter first password in "Password to open" text box and second password in "Password to modify" text box (if required) and click "Ok" button of dialog box. Microsoft Word will open "Confirm Password" dialog box for the confirmation of passwords. The maximum length of password is 15 characters.

* Re-enter the password to open and password to modify and click "Ok" button of Confirm Password dialog boxes one by one.

* Click "Save" button of Save As dialog box.

Speed Up Windows XP Boot (SLIGHTLY)

Here’s another tip for speed demons, determined to shave the last few nanoseconds off their Windows XP boot up times.

Truth be told this one probably won’t save more than a second or so but every little helps.

The idea is that XP wastes time and resources checking to see if there are any devices connected to empty IDE slots on the PC’s motherboard.

To stop this happening open Device Manager (Winkey + Break > Hardware > Device Manager) and click on the plus sign next to the IDE ATA/ATPI listing to expand the tree.

Right click on Primary IDE Channel and select Properties then the Advanced Settings tab. If either Device 0 or Device 1 is ‘Device Type’ box is empty (not greyed out) change the drop down menu setting for this box to ‘None’ and click OK.

Repeat for the Secondary IDE Controller listing. Note that if you add a new IDE device you will have to go back and change the Device Type drop down menu back to Auto Detect.

Very Slow boot when networking

On some XP Pro installations, when connected to a network (peer-peer in this case), the computer boot time is over 1:40. The system seems to freeze after logging in and the desktop may not appear or will freeze for a minute. As timed with the utility, Bootvis.exe, the problem was with the driver mrxsmb.dll, adding over 67 seconds to the boot time. Turning off and restoring file and printer sharing eliminated 65 seconds from the boot time.

1. Alt-click (or right click) on Network Places > Properties

2. Alt-click on Ethernet Adapter connection > properties

3. Un-check “File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks” > OK

4. reboot

5. If you need file or printer sharing, repeat the above, re-check the box and re-boot again.

How to increase broadband connection speed in Windows XP/2003?

To speed up the Internet connection speed we need to configure a special buffer in the computer's memory in order to enable it to better deal with interrupts made from the NIC or the USB modem.

This tip is only recommended if you have 256MB RAM or higher.

Step #1 - Identify the IRQ used by the NIC/USB modem

Follow these steps:

1.Open the System Information tool by running MSINFO32.EXE from the Run command.

2.Expand System Summary > Hardware Resources > IRQs.

3.Look for the listing made for your NIC (in my case - a Intel(R) PRO/100+ Management Adapter). Note the IRQ next to the specified line (in my case - IRQ21).

In case of USB modems you will first need to find the right USB device used by your modem. Follow these steps:

1.Open the Device Manager tool by running DEVMGMT.MSC from the Run command (or by right-clicking My Computer > Hardware tab > Device Manager button).

2.Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers and expand it.

3.Right-click the USB Root Hub and select Properties. Note that you might need to do so for all listed USB Root hubs (if there are more than one) in order to find the right one.

4.In the Power tab, look for your USB ADSL modem.

5.In the Resources tab look for the assigned IRQ (in this case - IRQ21).

6.This is the IRQ we're looking for.

Lamer note: IRQs and modem names might vary...

Step #2 - Modify the system.ini file

Follow these steps:

1.Run SYSEDIT.EXE from the Run command.

2.Expand the system.ini file window.

3.Scroll down almost to the end of the file till you find a line called [386enh].

4.Press Enter to make one blank line, and in that line type

IrqX=4096

where X is the designated IRQ number we found in step #1, in my case it's IRQ21.

Note: This line IS CASE SENSITIVE!!!

5.Click on the File menu, then choose Save.

6.Close SYSEDIT and reboot your computer.

Done. Speed improvement will be noticed after the computer reboots.

Clear the PageFile on shutdown

The Pagefile.sys is used for the Virtual Memory of Windows (compensates RAM).

Clearing it make your system more secure (temporary data may be written in the pagefile.sys and accessed without having administrator privileges).

To enable this, go to Start - ‘Run’ and type regedit.exe.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management and double click the ClearPageFileAtShutdown key.

Change it value to 1 in decimal. Restart your computer.

Automatic Screen Refresh

When you are working on your local computer and want to refresh any changes in your system automatically. For example some times you are watching sports results, online Stock Exchange rates and any changes to your hard drive but these changes are not usually refreshed until you press the F5 key on your keyboard.

To refresh your screen automatically you should edit your system Registry. But the best technique to edit the windows registry keys, always export or backup the whole windows registry keys on backup drive before editing. Because any mistake in Registry can cause serious problem in your computer to run properly.

Follow the given steps to change the updates automatically.

First click on Start button then type Regedit in Run option.

In Registry Editor panel go to the path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/UpdateMode

Here in right hand side panel edit the DWORD value to be between 1 and 5.

Now restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.
