English Wikipedia going offline for next 24hrs

"Do your homework early." That's the warning Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has issued some time ago. The reason, Wikipedia is going to blackout! The English version of the popular online encyclopedia will blackout and will be inaccessible for 24 hours starting the Tuesday-Wednesday midnight (10.30 AM on 18 January in India).

This is in protest of the anti-piract legislations, Protect IP Act (PIPA, the Senate bill) and the Stop Online Privacy Act (SOPA, the House bill), which the US State Congress is aiming to enact.

The blackout move by Wikipedia is the first major move by an internet company against the proposed legislations, which the entire Internet community has been vehemantly opposing. At the 17-18 Jan midnight EST Wikipedia's English version will go from white to a black background and remain so for 24 hours.

In India, the blackout will last for 24 hours starting at 10.30 AM on Wednesday 18 Jan. It is not clear if Google will also join suit, however, a couple of Google employees, through the Google Plus profiles, have been helping other portals effectively implement the blackout without getting their site ranking affecting in the search engine.

Prepaid mobile users to be provided call, SMS, data usage details

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released a set of guidelines for the interests of the prepaid customers. Under the new guidelines, the telecom operators are mandated to provide accurate updates on all the calls made and data usages by a prepaid mobile user. The telcos will have to send the details to the customer via SMS or USSD-based flash message. The details will also include information such as remaining prepaid balance after 2G/3G data usages. The TRAI believes the move will help make prepaid customers more aware about the charges levied by their respective telecom operators.

Among other notable changes have been specified by the TRAI is simplification of tariff vouchers. For easier identification, different vouchers will be given colour coding. The vouchers have been categorised as Plan Voucher, Top Up Voucher and Special Tariff Voucher (STV).

The Plan Voucher will be used for enrolling a consumer into a tariff plan. The voucher may also be used for enrolling a new customer or an existing customer. The Top Up Voucher will only feature monetary value ( in rupees) and shall be without any restrictions in terms of validity period or usage. The Special Tariff Voucher or STV could alter one or more items of applicable tariff in the consumer tariff plan in terms of limited or unlimited usage of voice calls, SMS or data. The validity of any STV shall not exceed ninety days. The STVs will not have any monetary value.

Also, the prepaid customers can avail full details of their account by placing a request to the telecom operator. The charges shall not exceed Rs. 50 and the information will be provided within 30 days to the consumer sent the request.

The new guidelines are part of the Telecom Consumers Protection Regulations, 2012, which is available on TRAI website www.trai.gov.in.

TRAI issues Telecom Consumer Protection Regulations 2012

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has come up with new regulation focused on protecting the interests of the consumer. Called the Telecom Consumer Protection Regulations, 2012, the regulations seek to provide information to pre-paid consumers on activation of voucher.

The new regulation demands that service provider provides information on the starter kit like SIM card, if applicable, mobile number (in cases where the subscriber is enrolled other than through mobile number portability), information about the type of connection - prepaid or post-paid and information about customer care number.

On activation of a subscription voucher, the service provider should provide through SMS information like activation of plan, title of the plan and validity period of the plan. Likewise, on activation of top-up voucher, the service provider should provide total amount charged, processing fee or administration charge, taxes deducted, net monetary value added and total available monetary value through SMS.

This is applicable to special tariff vouchers and any other plans the service provider may offer the consumer.
