CDMA Prepaid

Due to heavy competition from GSM counterparts, CDMA operators like Reliance and Tata Indicom launched prepaid services for their users. The concept of prepaid service of CDMA operators is not very different from GSM operators. Both provide rechargeable coupons.

If a GSM prepaid user fails to recharge within validity period, he can continue to receive messages and calls within grace period. And even beyond Grace period,he/she can simply buy a new SIM card for 99 bucks and pop it into his/her existing phone.

However the case with CDMA operators is different. If the prepaid coupon is not recharged within the grace period the connection is deactivated and the phone is rendered useless. To get connected again, you need to pay the cost of recharge plus the cost of new handset. The existing handset becomes useless! In fact, the Terms and Conditions section of Customer Application, of Reliance says, "Once cancelled, Prepaid service cannot be reactivated."

In other words, if someone's Reliance prepaid connection is deactivated, then he has to repay the minimum amount of Rs.2999 for both the connection and the handset. Similarly if somebody is a Tata Indicom mobile user he needs to repay Rs.4000, which includes a handset and two rechargeable coupons.

It is quite understood that CDMA mobile handsets cannot be used like GSM handsets with variable service providers due to technical reasons. But it still remains unclear, why users cannot reuse their handsets with the same service provider once his initial connection is cancelled. Is this because of technical problems or sort of business strategy?

BPL Mobiles Invest 1000 Cr

BPL Mobiles India plans to invest Rs.1000 crore to develop infrastructure in the next 1 year with a special focus on the Maharashtra circle. It will introduce multi-player gaming soon.

Krishna Angara, executive vice president, BPL Mobile said: "The company intends to raise Rs.1,000 crore for infrastructure development through a combination of internal accruals and vendor financing."

Angara said that the company has taken initiatives with a special focus on Maharashtra circle. BPL is now in the third position with Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) and Idea Cellular leading the pack.

BPL Mobile is working on a three-pronged strategy under its 'operation claw back.' The strategy includes investing in enhancing network coverage, bringing in cutting edge technology and delivering value to consumer through products and services. The company has decided to install 550 base stations across its circles.

Angara claimed that the company has completed the first phase which included network coverage, brand visibility and unique product promotions.

"We are into the second phase of investment which will enhance the network coverage and technology. We expect to have at least 4 million customers same time next year".

BPL Mobile has a total subscriber base of 2.01 million of which Mumbai alone contributes over 1 million. Angara claimed that the blended (post-paid and pre-paid) average revenue per user for the company was Rs 750 per month.

BPL Mobile has also registered an impressive 90 per cent growth in the last seven months across its circles. "We have achieved impressive revenue growth and consistently have achieved quarter-on-quarter revenue growth", Angara added.

Wi-Fi to Cut Call Costs

Motorola plans to introduce a device that switches seamlessly between cellular networks and Wi-Fi networks whenever possible. This technique allows phone calls to be made for a small fraction of the calling cost of traditional calls, or even free.

Wi-Fi phones employ a technology known as Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP), which translates conversations into packets of data that are sent over the Internet, instead of the conventional, circuit-switched phone system, for part of their journey.

The technology reduces the traditional notion of "long distance" — just as there's no extra charge to send e-mails around the world.

Reliance to shift to 10-digit numbers

Reliance India Mobile will be converting the mobile numbers of its Mumbai subscribers from the existing 8-digit to a 10-digit system around the end of October. The conversion of numbers of all the subscribers across the country to the 10-digit numbering plan will be completed by mid-November.

The company is converting the existing 8-digit numbers to the mobile standard of a 10-digit numbering system, beginning with 9, in a phased manner across the various circles.

So far, the new numbering system has been implemented across five circles, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Kerala, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.

The company is starting the number change process in Tamil Nadu and Chennai from tomorrow. It takes 3-4 days on an average to change the number of all the subscribers in any circle. “We have a subscriber base of 80 lakh across the country.

People will no longer be charged a higher interconnect charge for calls to Reliance mobile phones.

Until now, some cellular operators like Hutch were levying a higher charge of 50 paise per minute for calls made from mobile phones to Reliance phones since their numbering system did not recognise the `non-9’ numbers as mobile phones.

For consumers, the advantage is that people calling them do not have to dial the prefix the city code anymore.

Also, for calls within the circle, say between Nagpur to Pune, an STD facility was required earlier although these calls were charged at the same rate as local calls. Now, customers can call directly without the STD facility.

The change to a new numbering system has been long delayed over the issue of change in points of interconnection (PoIs).

As a mobile operator, Reliance Info has to now have a connectivity at the LDCA (long distance charging area) level as compared to the SDCA (short distance charging area) level connectivity enjoyed by fixed-line operators.

After the conversion, Reliance numbers will start with `93’ instead of the `3’ that they start with now.

This will be followed by a 3-digit MSC code that varies from circle to circle. The last 5 digits, in most cases, will be the same as the last 5 digits of the existing number.

Post-paid subscribers are being given a choice to choose a new number if they so wish. Those with premium numbers would have a choice in choosing the new premium numbers.

Reliance Info will be using several mediums to convey the new numbers to their subscribers such as SMS, letters, R-World outlets, besides others.

Also, for a period of one month, both the old and the new numbers will remain active.

Cellphone Users Face Risk

People who have used cellphones for at least 10 years may have an increased risk of developing a rare brain tumor, according to a study published in the international journal Epidemiology. Researchers at the Institute of Environmental Medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, found almost a fourfold increase of the tumors — known as acoustic neuromas — on the side of the head where the phone was held most often.

The work was done as part of the World Health Organization's cellphone research agenda, and experts in the field said it must be taken seriously and is likely to rekindle consumer worries about the risks of using the phones.

"The Karolinska researchers are respected around the world, and this study will force health agencies to take a fresh look at mobile-phone risks," said Louis Slesin, publisher of Microwave News, who has been covering the industry since its early days. "This study should put an end to the industry's call to stop mobile-phone health research."

At least one past study conducted for the cellphone industry also had suggested a link between the phones and this type of tumor. But cellphone-industry officials yesterday said no conclusions can be drawn from the Swedish research.

The study, involving 150 acoustic-neuroma patients and 600 healthy people, is one of at least six studies that have investigated possible links between cellphone use and acoustic neuromas. Most had fewer long-term users than the Karolinska study.

Acoustic neuromas are slow-growing, noncancerous tumors that develop on a nerve linking the brain and the inner ear. The most common first symptom is hearing loss, but the tumor as it grows can push against brain tissue. If not treated, it can be life-threatening. Such tumors occur in about one person per 100,000 in the general population.

To conduct the three-year study, researchers interviewed people who had developed the tumors — asking about their cellphone use, how many phones they had used, the make and model, duration of calls, whether they used a hands-free set and on which side of the head they held the phone.

Researchers said they found no association between the tumors and the amount of use measured in hours or cumulative number of calls, but rather on the length of time those in the study had been regular users of cellphones. Regular use was defined as an average of at least once a week during six months or more.

Anders Ahlbom, director of the Institute of Environmental Medicine, said in a phone interview that the data are statistically significant, but follow-up studies are needed. He said the mechanism by which cellphone radiation might cause tumors is unknown.

Remove scratches from CDs and DVDs

I had heard of toothpaste, which was the first remedy I tried. But I found other methods, too. Below are the results of my exploration, complete with my own experience with the remedy. Remember, I can't guarantee results. If your scratches are very deep you're probably out of luck. But if a few scratches are giving you some skipping or the CD/DVD is unreadable, this may save you a trip to your local Best Buy.

Note: NEVER clean any CD or DVD in a circular motion. Always clean in straight lines from the center of the disc outwards. Otherwise, you'll just make things even worse.

Toothpaste.
I had heard about this one, but I never really knew what to do. Here are a few of the videos I found on the subject.

Product Advisory: Nokia BL-5C battery

Nokia logo

Dear Nokia Customer,

This is a product advisory for the Nokia-branded BL-5C battery manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. Ltd. of Japan between December 2005 and November 2006. This product advisory does not apply to any other Nokia battery.

Nokia has identified that in very rare cases the affected batteries could potentially experience over heating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge. Nokia is working closely with relevant local authorities to investigate this situation.

Nokia has several suppliers for BL-5C batteries that have collectively produced more than 300 million BL-5C batteries. This advisory applies only to the 46 million batteries manufactured by Matsushita between December 2005 and November 2006. There have been approximately 100 incidents of over heating reported globally. No serious injuries or property damage have been reported.

Consumers with a BL-5C battery subject to this advisory should note that all of the approximately 100 incidents have occurred while charging the battery. According to Nokia's knowledge this issue does not affect any other use of the mobile device. Concerned consumers may want to monitor a mobile device while charging that contains a BL-5C battery subject to this product advisory.

BSNL hack for Internet

Free gprs in bsnl

here are the steps to perform:-

Logic: the server has a major bug in it, by which it fails to block two simultaneous connections from the phone and establishes a connection with full internet working,

Supported devices: all phones with multichannel gprs support

For connection on your mobile phone:-

1) Make two connections like bsnlportal and BSNLPORTAL1

(names of profile don’t matter, u can keep one as billgates and shahrukhkhan lol..the basic purpose of names is to enable the user to differentiate between the two accounts,)

2) Select the application you got to have the full connection working on.
Surpassingly “web” now just select “bsnlportal” profile and select a link like wap.cellone.in the page will get open, just press the red button such that the “web” application goes in the background.
Make sure that the gprs connection is still established with the web app. Two parallel lines on the top left of the screen will confirm this

3) Now open any other app that requires web connection like opera. Select BSNLPORTAL and open any other link like wap.google.com, u will get error –

the aim of using the other app is to perform multi-channel gprs,
this is verified by seeing some dots on the pre-existing connection established by “web”

(step 2)

“Access denied.

Technical description:
403 Forbidden - You are not allowed to communicate with the requested resource.”

4) close opera and open web and open a site like esato.com

5) if everything is done as said here then esato will load and voila! We have the whole internet!

For connection on pc.

1)create a connection and enter the number to be dialed as *99***1#

2) enter the following string as extra initialization command

3)now dial from pc, the connection will be established

4)pick the phone and open “web” open “wap.cellone.in” the phone shows error .

5) close “web” and then from the browser open www.google.com
and voila! The whole intenet is here

settings for profiles

apn: celloneportal
ip: 192.168.51.163
port : 8080

leave other fields blank as they are of the least concern!

the browser settings on pc too go the same as mentioned above!

Airtel Hack for free internet

You need a PC or a Laptop and the required connectivity tools ,ie.,
Serial/USB cable OR Infrared Device OR Bluetooth dongle

1) Activate Airtel Live! ( It’s FREE so no probs)

2) Create TWO Airtel gprs data accounts (yep TWO) and select the
FIRST as the active profile.

3) Connect your mobile to the PC (or Laptop) and install the driver for
your mobile’s modem.

4) Create a new dial-up connection using the NEW CONNECTION
WIZARD as follows

Connecting Device : Your mobile’s modem
ISP Name : Airtel (or anything you like)
Phone Number : *99***2# / Try 99***1
Username and Password : blank

5) Configure your browser and download manager to use the proxy
100.1.200.99 and port 8080.( My advice is to use Opera since you
can browse both wap and regular websites)

6) Connect to the dial-up account. You will be connected at 115.2
kbps (but remember, that is a bad joke).

7) Pick up your mobile and try to access any site. You will get “Access
Denied…”(except for Airtel Live!). IT DOES NOT MATTER.
Keep the mobile down.

8 ) On the PC ( or Laptop) open your browser, enter any address ,
press ENTER and…….WAIT

9) After a few seconds the page will start to load and you have the
WHOLE internet at your disposal. ***************************************************************************************************************

3. Opera wap browser 4 mobile

2. Now open web using the duplicate Profile and u will see that two gprs connections will work simultaneously and at the web or the services page it will show "Unable to connect" or any error. well thats the signal of ur success.

3. Simply go on the Opera with web on and open any site u want for free. No Charges No nothing.

U can also use it through ur computer..........

someone said dis too

The main principle behind this is we hav 2 fool the bsnl techies 2 activate portal and thus get gprs activated / get "G" signal on ur cell as bsnl portal (wap.cellone.in) needs "gprs signal on ur cel (whether gprs is formaly activated/registerd or not (by my method )i dont know)

NORMALLY THEY DONT DO THAT INSPITE OF THE FACT THAT THEY SHOULD ACTIVATE GPRS SIGNAL SERVICE FOR PORTAL!!!
AND THEY WILL GIVE U NO OF REASONS----
---THAT portal is message based , so go to cellone icon in menu and use that sms based portal (what the f**k)
---THAT portal service will be activated when u will activate gprs by filling up form and registering at nearest CCN!!
---THAT ur handset has some problems (if u say that "G" signal is not present)
----etc,etc!!

U HAVE 2 ACTIVATE PORTAL FIRST WHICH IS FREE AND U CAN EAT UP CC'S FOR THIS REASON!!
SO WHAT U HAV 2 DO IS--
1) SEND PORTAL to 3733 AND CONFIRMATION SHD COME WITH 5 MIN AT-MAXIMM !!
2) SEND FOR ATLEAST 20-30 TIMES (CAN B ANY MORE THAN THAT)
JUST S**K UP THE NETWORK(3733) WITH THESE MESSAGES !!!
THAT'S FREE NO!! BOTH ON POST AND PRE!!
3) NOW ALONG ALSO SEND 20-40 SMS AS GPRS TO 3733
(NO OF SMS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL 2 HATE FOR BSNL AND HOW EARLY U WNAN GET UR GPRS ACTIVATED) this is also free both on post and pre!!
4) U WILL GET CONFIRMATION IN BOTH CASES AND MSG TELLS U 2 GET SETTINGS FROM 9400024365, THE NO OF CC!!
HERE AT MY PLACE I CAN DIAL 9419024365 ALSO!
BOTH R TOLL FREE AND BOTH R LOCATED IN CHANDIGARH!!!
(((((((AND SOME OF THE CC'S SAY they cant give such sensitive information that where they r located, as if thay have a 3 rd world of their own! and the other dumbs said that they r in chandigarh!!!!)))))

I WOULD ADVISE ALL FIRST, 2 call them once 2 get the settings!!
(most of the times that is incorect but gives u an idea of settings in ur area))
Try and in ur 1 st call only,
talk roughly and tell them u r calling 10-20th time just for settings and is that their service!!!
5) Now when u get them save them AND plz post them here!!!
6) now GET ATLEAST 2-3 COMPLAINTS REGISTERED( each after 1 day) THAT UR PORTAL HAS NOT ACTIVATED AND GET THEIR SERIAL NO.
and in the end bombard them abt the status of all those complaints !!
b4 registering ur complaint they will hesitate much and always say taht they will b sendin new settings which r accurate! but dont belive them and just register complaints!!
6)AFTER THAT, u have 2 only wait until "G" signal is there on ur screen!!

LOOK, WHAT I HAVE WRIITEN ABV IS METHOD by which i got activated my "G" service !!! without fillin any form or such and without any money drain!!
may be since it bypasses the formal way of registeration, that is why this trick is working !!!!!!!!!!!!
